It is a massive book of very high quality; the color plates are indeed phenomenal and Robert Hobbs' essay on Avery is insightful, although somewhat hagiographic.

In my recent, growing collection of art books, it one of the best purchases I have made/5(10). Milton Avery: The Late Paintings aims to restore his prestige, with big, handsome plates of his work (87 images, 52 in color). Intelligent text by curator Robert Hobbs links Avery's oeuvre to s trends, to Ober-critic Clement Greenberg and to the poet Wallace Stevens /5(4).

Milton Avery is an American Modernist. I happened across this book a few months ago. I kept looking at it and then putting it back on the shelves. Last week I finally broke down and purchased it.

It is a beautiful example of abstraction combined with representation. I'm only about a quarter of a way through this. More insight to come/5.
